We are raising funds to cancel debt for individuals in central and eastern VA.

Donate today and you'll have a tangible impact on the lives of families facing crushing medical debt.

Medical debt is often disastrous for the lives of individuals and families. As we engage in support of our neighbors, we find that the primary debt for most involves something health-related. We usually only provide direct resources to individuals and families living in Greater Fulton, Montrose, Sandston, and Seven Pines, but we knew we had to act when the opportunity presented itself to cancel debt for an entire region. Our motto is ‘We are all connected’ and believe this is an act of solidarity.

The Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC) signed a pledge with RIP Medical Debt to abolish medical debt. NRC will need to raise over $19,000 by March to cancel the $3.4 million in debt that RIP Medical Debt has identified in the Richmond-Petersburg Designated Media Market Area that covers the City of Richmond, City of Petersburg, the entire counties of Amelia, Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Henrico, Hanover, King William, New Kent, Nottoway, Powhatan, Prince George, and Sussex, and part of the counties of Brunswick, Buckingham, Caroline, Cumberland, Essex, Fluvanna, Greensville, Isle of Wight, James-City, King and Queen, Louisa, Lunenburg, Prince Edward, Southampton, Surry, and York. (See map below.)

How does our goal amount cancel $3.4 million in debt? Medical debt costs about $.01 for every dollar. RIP Medical Debt purchases medical debt at the same rate as debt collections agencies, allowing us to maximize our impact with every dollar raised. This will RIP Medical Debt to cancel all of the identified debt that is pending collections or already in collections for eligible households.

Who is eligible? This will benefit households that earn less than 4x the federal poverty line or whose debts are 5% or more of their annual income.

How will recipients know that they've received debt cancellation? They'll get a letter from RIP Medical Debt notifying them that their debt has been canceled. NRC will not have a list of recipients.
